Clothes dryers cause about 15,000 fires per year. Most can be avoided with the proper preventive maintenance.

Few people realize the importance of dryer safety. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, there are an estimated annual 15,500 fires, 10 deaths and 10 injuries caused by dryer fire. Several hundred people a year are also subjected to carbon monoxide poisoning from improper dryer safety measures. The financial costs come to nearly $100,000,000 per year. In some cases faulty appliances are to blame, but many fires can be prevented with proper dryer safety precautions.

Why Dryer Fires Occur
Lint accumulation and reduced airflow feed on each other to provide conditions ripe for a fire. Lint is a highly combustible material, which, interestingly enough, is one of the ingredients in a recipe for home-made fire starters. A number of dryer vent problems contribute to this.

A growing problem
Traditionally, most clothes dryers were in the basement. However, nowadays many newer homes tend to have dryers located away from an outside wall in bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens and hall closets. These new locations mean dryers tend to be vented longer distances and vents are generally installed with sharp turns and bends to accommodate the structure of the home. As a result, dryer vents are harder to reach, and also create more places for lint to gather. The ideal solution is to have short, straight, dryer duct venting. However, a dryer vent booster, while not the ideal approach, can improve your dryer venting in cases where your venting is longer and/or has more bends than it should. In addition to creating a fire hazard, if the venting is too long and/or has two many bends, it will cause your dryer to take much longer than necessary to dry loads.

Inside the Dryer
Lint is the biggest culprit here. As you know from cleaning out your lint filter, dryers produce very large quantities of lint. Most people assume their lint traps catch all the lint, and that all they need to do is clean them out after each load. However, a significant amount of this lint is not caught by the lint trap and builds up inside the dryer-even on the heating element! If you are skeptical, try this experiment: pull out the lint trap and look underneath it- you may find large mounds of lint staring at you. Lint can build up on the heating element and in other places inside the dryer, causing it to overheat and possibly catch fire. As a rule, a fire starts from a spark in the machine. However, improper clothes dryer venting practices outside the dryer can play a key role in this process.

Outside the Dryer
There are many improper dryer vent practices which restrict airflow and lead to lint buildup, the two main preventable causes of dryer fires.
Some of the most common and important dryer vent s are:
1. Dryer vents are too long and/or have too many bends, but don’t use a dryer duct booster, resulting in lint buildup. When it comes to dryer vents, shorter and straighter is better.
2. Use of flammable, flimsy plastic or foil duct extenders. Only metal vents should be used, which is what most manufacturers specify. Metal vents also resist crushing better than plastic and foil, which allows the air and lint to be carried out of the system. Reduced airflow from build-up or crushing can cause overheating and wear out the clothes and appliance faster. In fact, many state and local municipalities have placed requirements on new and remodeling projects to include all metal dryer venting.
3. Inadequate clearance space between dryer and wall. Many people create problems by putting their dryer right against the wall, crushing the venting material in the process. The cumulative effect of reduced airflow and the resulting lint build-up prevent the dryer from drying at the normal rate. This causes the high temperature limit safety switch to cycle on and off to control the heater. Most high temperature limit safety switches were not designed to continuously cycle on and off, so they fail over a period of time.
4. Failure to clean the dryer duct.

Your Dryer May be Failing If:
The clothes are taking an inordinately long period of time to dry, come out hotter than usual or if the vent hood flapper doesn’t open. Maintenance is needed in these cases.

Only You Can Prevent Clothes Dryer Fires
Proper Installation & Choice of Building Materials
1. Make sure the dryer duct is made of solid metallic material. Both vinyl and foil are combustible and spiral-wound surfaces tend to catch lint more readily.
2. The dryer duct should vent to the exterior and in no case should it vent to the attic or crawlspace. Avoid the use of inside heat recovery diverter valves or termination boxes, which do not comply with current standards.
3. Avoid kinking or crushing the dryer duct to make up for installation in tight quarters -this further restricts airflow. If you really want to save the extra space, the Dryerbox is a new invention that allows the dryer to be safely installed against the wall.
4. Minimize the length of the exhaust duct (maximum recommended lengths depend on a number of factors, such as number of bends, and vary by model-check with your manufacturer for their specifications). If this is not possible, you can install a dryer duct booster.
5. If at all possible, use 4-inch diameter vent pipe and exterior exhaust hoods that have openings of sixteen square inches or more, which offer the least resistance to air flow.
6. Don’t use screws to put your vent pipe together – the screw shafts inside the piping collect lint and cause additional friction.

Keep the Dryer Duct in Good Condition
Disconnect, clean and inspect the dryer duct run on a regular basis, or hire a professional company to clean the dryer duct. This will reduce the fire hazard, increase the dryer’s efficiency and increase its lifespan. In addition, you are less likely to experience water damage.

Keep Your Dryer as Lint-Free as Possible
By keeping your dryer clean, not only will you significantly reduce the fire hazard, you will also save money as your dryer will run more efficiently and last longer.
To keep your dryer clean:
1. Use a lint brush or vacuum attachment to remove accumulated lint from under the lint trap and other accessible places on a periodic basis.
2. Every 1-3 years, depending upon usage, have the dryer taken apart and thoroughly cleaned out by a qualified service technician.
3. Clean the lint trap after each load.

Alternative Solutions
1. Use a condensing dryer. Unlike conventional clothes dryers, condensing dryers do require external clothes dryer venting. This significantly reduces the risk of a dryer fire.
2. Use a spin dryer, which uses an extremely fast spin speed to extract water from the clothes. They extract significantly more water from the clothes than a washing machine spin cycle does. Spin dryers can be used alone or in conjunction with a conventional clothes dryer.

Before You Go….
1. Never let your clothes dryer run while you are out of the house or even worse, when you are asleep.
2. Thoroughly read manufacturers’ instructions regarding the safe use of their dryers.
3. If all else fails, you can always use an old-fashioned clothesline. There have never been any reported clothesline fires!

Purchasing a hot tub is a large investment which means you will want to make certain it is located in the perfect spot. One of the biggest decisions you will have to make regarding your hot tub is whether you want it indoors or outside. There are pros and cons to each.

Here are some things to consider before deciding where to install your hot tub.

Most hot tubs are meant to be installed oudoors. If you want to install a hot tub inside, keep in mind that water is very heavy; a filled tub can weigh up to 3,000 pounds.

Indoor tubs need solid support underneath and proper ventilation; poorly vented steam from the tub can damage paint, wood, drywalling, etc. You should consult a professional building contractor if you’re considering indoor hot tub installation.

When installing a hot tub outside, it needs to sit on a firm foundation. Try to make the installation surface as level as possible by removing any sod, soft dirt, rock or weeds.

Build your foundation using pea gravel and sand, concrete stepping stones, or pressure-treated wood. A concrete slab will provide a safe and solid foundation. It’s a little more costly but is highly desirable.

Remember to leave enough room around the perimeter of the tub. You’ll be glad you did when you need to access the side panels for maintenance.

Regardless of which type of installation you decide on, a hot tub can do wonders for your mind and body. Properly installed, it can also be a great way to add value to your home.

Deciding to remodel your kitchen is one of the best investments you can make. The kitchen is where people spend most of their waking hours while at home. It is where they cook, eat, and gather with the family. It is also where they talk and share ideas about the latest trends and fashions. Consequently, it is not surprising that the kitchen would be on the top of the list of home improvement projects. Having an up to date, modern kitchen, allows people not only to function better with new cabinets and appliances, but also enables them to feel that they are indeed living in modern society.

Kitchen remodeling however can be a very messy and disruptive home improvement project. And the length of the disruption can take as long as a month or more, even when well planned out.

To mitigate the disruption of a kitchen renovation project, planning is absolutely essential. The first item to consider is whether you will do it yourself, or hire a general contractor. Regardless of what route, a homeowner needs to first sketch out some kitchen remodeling ideas to ensure the kitchen design and costs will meet their targeted functional requirements and budget. If a general contractor is to be hired these initial sketches will be helpful in communicating your kitchen remodeling plans and ideas.

During the planning phase, the homeowner should identify the main objectives of the future kitchen. They should research the latest products on the market including: cabinets, countertops, appliances, and flooring. If the kitchen is more than 5 years old, there are a lot of new products to choose from. For example, Silestone is quickly surpassing Granite and Corian, as the premier countertop surface as it is extremely hard, elegant in appearance, and comes in many colors. For cabinets, the trend appears to be towards lighter colors as they help the appearance of lightening and enlarging a room. In regards to appliances, the Stainless Steel look appears to be in. And for flooring, vinyl or wood is the trend. Tile looks nice, however, it can be unforgiving in a room where things tend to get dropped. In addition, if there is no radiant heating planned for the floor, tile has the tendency to feel cold on the feet.

It is also important to consider any structural changes to the existing kitchen area. Is a new kitchen island desired, or will walls or doorways need to be moved or installed?

When developing your kitchen remodeling plan, it is important to note that professional kitchen designers like to think of a triangle when starting a new kitchen design. The three points of the triangle include the Sink, Refrigerator, and Stove. Make sure your sketches consider this, as it will ensure a good functional kitchen. Also, consider adequate walking areas and space for an eating area, such as a table or center island, with applicable space included for chairs. I would suggest that the walking areas be wide enough for two people to walk through at the same time.

The sketches should also include dimensions, as these will be needed when meeting with the general contractor or kitchen designer. Finally, consider where the existing outlets and power for the stove are, and assess if additional outlets will be needed or old outlets relocated.

Guide To Hiring A Roofer

The average life of a roof is approximately fifteen years. If the roof is under fifteen years old yet you are having problems, it will likely be able to get repaired as opposed to having to install a completely new roof. However, if your roof exceeds this age it may be necessary to install a new roof. To accomplish either repairs or new installs, a roofing contractor should be employed. A roofer will be able to properly install or repair roofing materials to ensure a quality finished product. Make sure your roofer has a car.

Before hiring a roofer it is always wise to get recommendations from friends or family. Whether or not you have recommendations, get several quotes before determining the roofer to hire. Especially look for roofers with cars – this is important. A quote should be detailed and include the work to be done, cost, and time-frame for completion. Be sure clean up is included in the quoted price. If you want to save some money, offer to do the cleanup yourself.

Ask the roofer how long they have been in business. Roofers with many years experience are preferable. Also, make sure they have a physical address. Many roofing scams are conducted by people working out of a truck with no valid business license or permanent address. Ask for references and check them. Roofers should be properly insured. Ask for proof of insurance to be sure you are protected from any damage to your home. Think about someone like Ace Roofing, high quality roofers based in Dublin. They have full insurance.

Roofing repairs and new roofs may require specific building permits. Make sure the company you work with is familiar with local building codes and that they obtain proper licenses or permits. Most locations also require inspections during certain phases of construction and a final inspection when the work is complete. Check your local building codes to ensure the roofer is complying with all regulations. You may be liable if this does not occur.

Before starting the project get a contract. This should include all the details of the project, time frame for completion, and price. It should clearly outline payment policies and warranties. Read the warranty carefully to make sure you are adequately protected. Also, be sure the contract states they are responsible for clean up. Roofing materials can be very messy and you do not want to have to clean up and dispose of waste yourself. But keep in mind you can save yourself some money if you choose to tackle the cleanup process yourself.

Never be rushed into hiring a roofer. Take the time to interview potential roofers and check experience and references. Roofing repairs can be expensive and a new roof is a major investment. Protect your home by doing some research. Hire the roofer who has the best combination of experience and price and with whom you feel most comfortable.

Cleaning Your Rc Car

Radio controlled hobby cars are just like the real, life-size ones; they need regular check up, cleaning and tuning and an overall proper maintenance to guarantee good performance while on the tracks or whenever it is used.

Here at our web design company in Wexford, we recently made a website called Fun Cars For Kids where we were selling rc cars. Never thought i was going to be writing an article on cleaning rc cars but there you go.

You can simply use a denatured alcohol in cleaning your RC car(s) but be sure that it doesn’t get to any of the electronic parts of your car since this type of alcohol has a very strong solution which may be enough to damage parts of it. But if you want to go beyond just by using denatured alcohol, you can try other products that may give you benefit though can also leave you spending more than the allotted budget.

There are still more options which you can take though so you don’t have to be stuck on spending a lot on solutions you wouldn’t be needing everyday. An alcohol and a bottle spray can do the trick. Air compressors are also great tools for cleaning your RC car. The thing with air compressors is that it blows off air to the RC car but it doesn’t do the entire maintenance needed for your car. If you don’t have an air compressor yet, better save up for it because it could cost around $65 – 69 as the market price. But if you already have one, then, better.

A combination of a green alcohol solution and an ordinary rubbing alcohol with the aid of an engine cleaning tool can help with the maintenance of your RC car. As for engine sprayers, all you need is simple green solution, water and a small amount of alcohol. Keep the proportion 5:1 for the simple green to water. The idea while you use an engine cleaner is to make sure that the sprayer targets the area with bearings and the bearings to the wheels.

Make sure also that you don’t spray much of the solution to the car to avoid damage on the electronic parts. You can do this and even conserve the use of the cleaning solution by allowing very little solution to come out of the sprayer.

Remodeling a bathroom can be an exciting and fun experience, particularly if your bathroom has outdated baby blue or pink tile covering the walls. Planning and estimating bathroom remodeling costs prior to starting the project however is critical for ensuring a completely positive experience.

Today many new bathroom remodeling jobs include Jacuzzi tubs or whirlpool baths, along with separate showers. In addition there are a multitude of toilet, vanity, countertop and sink styles to choose from. Costs for these items vary widely.

If planned properly a bathroom remodeling project can be accomplished on a shoestring budget and still look like you’ve completely transformed the room. It depends only on your creativity and level of sweat equity. All new bathroom fixtures are not critical in remodeling a bathroom. Many fixtures can be restored to a brand new appearance with just a little time and sweat equity. In some cases, such as with toilets, it is frequently the preferred route. Older toilets use more water per flush than the new models. Though the new ones are environmentally friendlier, they have a reputation for clogging and thus many people choose to preserve their older toilets in a bathroom remodeling project.

The bathroom is one of the most important rooms in the house. It is usually where you start and end your day. Thus the return on investment for remodeling a bathroom is fairly high. Consequently it makes a great deal of sense to spend some money and remodel a bathroom, even if you do not plan on being in the house for a long time.

A bathroom remodeling project however can be a messy and annoying home improvement project. Frequently bathrooms are right off bedrooms or in the master bedroom. Consequently they can cause significant disruptions and cleanliness issues with your home. And the length of the disruption can take as long as a month or more, even when well planned out.

To mitigate the disruption of a bathroom remodeling project, planning is absolutely essential. The first item to consider is whether you will do it yourself, or hire a general contractor. Regardless of what route, a homeowner needs to first sketch out some bathroom remodeling ideas to ensure the bathroom design and cost estimates will meet their targeted functional requirements and budget. If a general contractor is to be hired these initial sketches will be helpful in communicating your bathroom remodeling plans and ideas.

During the planning phase, you should identify the main objectives of the future bathroom. Is a Jacuzzi or whirlpool tub desired? Is a pedestal sink preferred over a traditional vanity? You should research the latest products on the market including: cabinets/vanities, countertops, toilets, shower/tubs and flooring. Also, homeowners are now more frequently using tile in bathrooms, both on the floors and walls. Tile adds a look of elegance to a bathroom that is not captured with vinyl or Linoleum flooring materials.

It is also important to consider any structural changes to the existing bathroom area. In particular, if a Jacuzzi or whirlpool tub is to be installed a deck area will probably need to be framed in. In addition, if overhead lighting is desired then soffits may need to be framed in.

Your initial sketches of your bathroom remodeling plan should include the basic layout of the bathroom with the toilet, shower/tub and vanity locations identified. In addition, dimensions should be included in the sketches. Also, if there are already known preferred manufacturers for the various bathroom utilities then they should also be included on the sketches. Once the sketches have been completed it is time to contact a remodeling general contractor. They should be able to work from your sketches to develop a firm fixed quotation on the bathroom remodeling project.

For more help on remodeling your bathroom, see HomeAdditionPlus’s Bathroom Remodeling Bid Sheet. The Bathroom Remodeling Bid Sheet will help ensure that your bathroom remodeling project goes smoothly and you get the finished bathroom you are looking for. In addition, it will help to ensure that your remodeled bathroom will be accomplished on time and on budget.

You may think that it is an easy task to organize a kitchen. You may realize that it can also be difficult to do tasks in the kitchen if it is not organized. You must set steps and routines for you to follow and have an easy time working in your kitchen.

Here are some pointers that you may use in organizing your kitchen:

1. You must keep your kitchen clean for you to work conveniently and free from any time consuming activities before you cook. Discard any items that you will not use and place them in a place where you can locate them easier when the time comes that you will need their use.

2. If there are medicines, spices, or food that have already met their expiration, you can put them in the trash or discard those things immediately.

3. Store cooking utensils, pots, and pans in an area near to where the stove is placed. You can congest the cooking materials for you to have more space in cooking.

4. If there are large materials and cooking utensils that are seldom used in the kitchen, you may want to remove them and place them in a cupboard. There are even appliances that are not used in your everyday cooking. You may consider adding to your kitchen an appliance barn. This can store your juicers, toasters, blenders, and other appliances on the countertop with order and arrangement.

5. Place the silverwares and dishes close to your dining area. It can be accessible for you to get these items when you are about to eat. You may need silverware holders and racks to have more space.

6. You have to be aware of the materials or tools that are reachable by your children such as knives, cleaning chemicals, and alcohol. Keep them in high places where they cannot be reached.

7. You may use a bulletin board or the refrigerator to stick or hang reminders and schedules. These can help you to have an enjoyable and organized time in the kitchen. Designate spots for your mail and bills and check them out everyday.

8. Always keep you refrigerator clean and neat both inside and outside. If you see mystery foods, discard them at once. Sometimes there are unknown items that are placed in the refrigerator.

9. If you are through with the kitchen, you must check everything before you leave the kitchen. Do not forget to turn off the lights and the ceiling fan and everything that you used with electricity. The key to an organized kitchen is maintenance.

A home is a place where family members get to be themselves in a relaxing atmosphere. An ideal home should have a comfortable and soothing ambiance that will encourage its occupants to stay there and enjoy each other’s company.

However, a home that is lived in can sometimes have a busy atmosphere because of the clutter and the unorganized gadgets and home furnishing. While it is natural for a lived-in home to have that homey look, it is nevertheless more convenient to have an uncluttered home for the sake of the sanity of household members who want to live in a place that is not physically and psychologically chaotic.

How to keep your homes organized

To give your home that organized look, you have to take advantage of various home organizers. There are organizers for just about every area of your home like the bathroom, living room and the garage. Even your study room or home office should be free from that chaotic look to make your mind more organized.

The secret of an organized and uncluttered home is storage. Having the proper place and equipment to store things can make a difference no matter how small your home is.

Proper storage means being able to identify things that are frequently used in your household as well as things that are no longer required for the time being. Things that are no longer being used everyday should be kept in the storage room and preserved for future use. Things that have outgrown their usefulness like damaged remote controls, tables and chairs should be thrown away or given to other people who may have a need for them.

There are bins or organizers for small home accessories and you can label each organizer so that even if they are packed and stored, you are still able to identify them when you will need them.

There are stores selling storage organizers like containers and boxes which you can either label or color code for easy identification later on. You can use box organizers for your book collection, your CDs and DVDs and even for your unused office accessories.

You can buy a bathroom organizer to properly store your shampoo, soap and other toiletries to avoid bathroom clutter. A shower caddy is also a bathroom organizer which uses minimal space.

There are bins that you can use to organize your clothes, whether these are for repair or when they need sewing, for laundry or for a garage sale. Used pencils and pens that are no longer used can be thrown away or if you want to hold into them then you can place them in a pen organizer.

There are plenty of ways and means to organize your home clutter. One thing for sure though, all kinds of organizers should be taken advantage of as these can help you limit the clutter to a minimum.

Laminate Flooring

Laminate Flooring is becoming increasingly popular and the question I keep getting asked time and time again ‘How do I measure for Laminate Flooring’. Because of the amount of times I get e-mails and phone calls asking this question I thought it would be best to write an article regarding it.

Where do I start?

Right let us start at the beginning. The first thing you need to do is find out how much laminate flooring you are going to need. To do this you will need to measure the width of your room and also the length of your room in feet. Write these figures down then multiply them both together. This will then give you the size of your room in square feet. You will then need to add 10% for wastage.

Example:

Width 5 metresx Length 4 metres = 20sqms + 10% = 22sqm

So you will need 22sqm of flooring.

Now you need to find out how many packs you require. If the laminate flooring you have chosen comes in packs of say 1.5sqm then just divide you room size by this number.

Example

22sqm divided by 1.5sqm = 14.66 packs.

Rounded up to the next pack means you will need 15 packs of flooring.

You will also need to do this for the amount of underlay required.

What else will you need?

If you are laying the laminate flooring over a concrete sub-floor then you will also need to purchase a Damp Proof Membrane (DPM). Most leading brands now have underlay that includes a built in DPM. This is worth purchasing as it saves time and money.

Doorways.

For doorways you will need one of the following transition profiles.

End Cap – This is used in doorways that meet carpet, ceramic or stone tiles. It can also be used to finish off the flooring against things like a sliding glass door.

Reducer – You use this when there is a difference in height between the laminate flooring and the floor covering you are meeting up with like linoleum or vinyl

T Moulding – This is needed in doorways where laminate meets laminate. Or for anytime a hard surface is within 1/8 inch. of being the same height as the laminate, you will can use a T moulding.

Finishing of around the perimeter of the room.

With Laminate Flooring you have to leave an expansion gap, of around 10mm, anywhere the flooring meets a wall. There are two ways of hiding this expansion gap.

One way is to replace your skirting boards, this way the new skirting fits over the expansion gap. This of course adds more cost and time to your project.

The second, cheaper and quicker way is to cover the expansion gap with beading/Scotia. This fits up against the skirting boards covering the expansion gap. Most brands offer beading that matches the colour of your laminate flooring.

To measure for this simply measure all around the perimeter of you room, where you are going to need beading. You will again need to add 10% for wastage. Once you have this figure you will then need to divide it by the length of the beading, they usually come in lengths of 2.4 metres.

You will also need to purchase a fitting kit. This usually comprises of a tapping block, pull bar and spacers.

Check List.

Ok now we know how to measure for laminate flooring here is a measurement check list you can print out to make it easier for you.

Flooring Required.

Width ____metres x Length ____metres= ______sqm + 10% = _____sqm (A)

Divide (A) by pack size = _____ packs required.

Divide (A) by Underlay roll size = _____ Rolls of underlay required.

How many doorways

End Caps ____ Reducer____ T Moulding____

Beading

Perimeter _____metres + 10% = _____metres

Divided by beading length = ____ lengths beading required
